Best women's perfumes in the UK
By the buychecked team · Updated 9 October 2026 · Prices refresh daily from the retailer feed
Choosing a perfume is partly about scent, which only you can judge, and partly about practical things that are easy to get wrong: the strength (EDT, EDP or parfum), the bottle size, and whether it suits every day or is something you save for evenings. Get those right and you are far less likely to end up with a bottle that sits unused on the dressing table.
Our top pick is Lancome La Vie Est Belle Eau de Parfum in the 100ml size, a long-established bestseller that works as a signature scent and makes sense at the larger size. On a tighter budget, Calvin Klein Euphoria Eau de Parfum gives you a full 100ml of a well-known designer EDP in the budget price band.
Below are seven single bottles across budget, mid-range and premium prices, covering everyday, office and evening wear, plus a plain-English guide to concentrations and sizes. If you are buying a present and want extras in the box, see our guide to perfume gift sets instead.
How we chose
We have not smelled or worn these perfumes for this guide, and we do not score how they smell. Picks are shortlisted by comparing the published information for each bottle across the full range of women's fragrances we list: the concentration (EDT, EDP or parfum), the bottle sizes available, price per bottle and the retailer's product description. Where we mention a scent note, it comes from the retailer's own description of that product. The aim is to help you pick the right strength, size and style for how you will wear it. Whether you like the scent itself is something to check on a tester before you commit.
1. Best overall
Lancome La Vie Est Belle EDP 100ml
£96.00 at Perfume UK · best for a signature scent you wear most days
La Vie Est Belle has been one of Lancome's best-known perfumes for years, which makes it a safe place to start if you want one bottle to wear most of the time. The retailer describes it as a rich floral, gourmand and oriental perfume with a praline note running through it, so it sits on the warmer, sweeter side rather than the light and fresh side. As an eau de parfum it should need fewer sprays than an EDT. We have picked the 100ml bottle because it is listed at well under double the price of the 50ml, so if you already know you like it, the bigger size is the better buy.
✓ Pros
- Eau de parfum strength for longer wear
- 100ml works out cheaper per millilitre than 50ml
- Widely known, so easy to try on a tester first
✕ Cons
- Sweet, gourmand style will not suit everyone
- Upper mid-range price for the 100ml
2. Best budget
Calvin Klein Euphoria For Women EDP 100ml
£45.00 at Perfume UK · best for a full-size designer EDP for less
Calvin Klein Euphoria is the cheapest way in this list to get a full 100ml of a recognised designer eau de parfum. The retailer describes it as a fruity floral with a pomegranate opening, exotic floral tones and a dry woody base. That mix of a bright start and a deeper base gives it a bit more weight than a typical light everyday scent, so it can work for evenings too. It sits in the budget price band, and the 100ml is only a little more than the 50ml, so the larger bottle makes more sense.
✓ Pros
- Budget price for 100ml of EDP
- Well-known name with a long track record
- Flexible enough for day or evening
✕ Cons
- Very widely worn, so less distinctive
- Not as light as a true office or summer scent
3. Best for the office
Emporio Armani She For Women EDP 100ml
£38.00 at Perfume UK · best for close, subtle everyday wear
Emporio Armani She is described by the retailer as a subtle, fresh floral woody perfume and, importantly, as a skin scent made to be experienced closely, with a key note of heliotrope. A skin scent is designed to stay near you rather than fill a room, which is exactly what you want in a shared office, on public transport or anywhere people are sitting close by. It is also one of the lowest-priced 100ml EDPs in our range, and the 100ml is listed at barely more than the 50ml.
✓ Pros
- Designed to sit close to the skin
- Very low price for a 100ml EDP
- Easy to wear every day without overpowering anyone
✕ Cons
- Subtle by design, so not one for making an entrance
- Less of a statement bottle than the premium picks
4. Best light everyday scent
Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh For Women EDT 125ml
£74.00 at Perfume UK · best for daytime, spring and summer
Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh is an eau de toilette, so it is lighter than the EDPs elsewhere in this list. The retailer describes it as a bright, light floral with a fresh, candy-sweet character. Light EDTs like this are popular for warm weather and daytime because they are easy to spray on without overdoing it, and they are less likely to feel heavy in the heat. The 125ml bottle is a generous size for a scent you are likely to reapply, and it is listed in the mid-range.
✓ Pros
- Large 125ml bottle
- Light EDT strength suits daytime and warm weather
- Easy to reapply without becoming overpowering
✕ Cons
- EDT fades sooner, so expect to top up
- Sweet, fresh style may feel too light for evenings
5. Best for evenings
Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum 90ml
£102.00 at Perfume UK · best for nights out and colder months
YSL Black Opium is the pick if you want a scent with more presence for evenings. The retailer describes it as a rich floral oriental with an unusual note of coffee. Rich, oriental-style perfumes tend to come across more strongly than fresh florals, which is why many people save them for nights out and the colder months. The 90ml bottle is a good middle ground: it is more economical than the 50ml, and you avoid paying for 150ml of a scent you may only wear a couple of times a week.
✓ Pros
- Eau de parfum with a richer, evening character
- Three bottle sizes to choose from
- 90ml is a sensible size for a scent you wear less often
✕ Cons
- Premium price band at 90ml
- Can be too much for a shared office
6. Best parfum strength
Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Absolu For Women Parfum 50ml
£84.00 at Perfume UK · best for maximum concentration in a smaller bottle
Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal Absolu is sold as a parfum, the most concentrated of the main fragrance strengths. The retailer describes it as a chypre oriental perfume with a black fig key note. Parfum-strength fragrances are usually applied with just one or two sprays, so a 50ml bottle goes further than the number suggests. If you already like the Scandal range and want a more intense version, or simply want a perfume that should not need topping up through the day, this is the one to look at. It is mid-range to premium on price.
✓ Pros
- Parfum concentration, the strongest in this list
- A little goes a long way
- Distinctive chypre oriental style
✕ Cons
- Only listed in 50ml
- Too intense for some people in close quarters
7. Best refillable bottle
Thierry Mugler Alien EDP Refillable 90ml
£98.00 at Perfume UK · best for a long-term signature scent
Mugler Alien comes in a refillable bottle, which is worth considering if you know this is a scent you will wear for years. The retailer describes it as a rich combination of white flowers and amber. With a refillable bottle you keep the main bottle and top it up rather than buying a new one each time, which reduces waste and can lower the cost over time. The 90ml size is the largest listed and the best value per millilitre of the three. It sits in the premium price band.
✓ Pros
- Refillable bottle for long-term use
- Three sizes, from 30ml to 90ml
- Eau de parfum strength
✕ Cons
- Premium price band
- Rich white floral and amber style is a strong personal taste
EDT, EDP and parfum: what the labels mean
The letters on the bottle tell you how much perfume oil is in the liquid. Eau de toilette (EDT) is lighter, usually somewhere around 5 to 15 percent. Eau de parfum (EDP) is stronger, usually around 15 to 20 percent. Parfum, sometimes called extrait, 'Le Parfum' or 'Absolu', is the most concentrated, often 20 percent or more. Exact figures vary by brand, so treat these as a rough guide.
A higher concentration usually lasts longer on the skin and needs fewer sprays, but it costs more per millilitre. It is also worth knowing that different versions of the same perfume can smell different, not just stronger. Brands often adjust the formula between EDT, EDP and parfum, so if you love one version, try the other before switching.
Signature scent or everyday scent?
A signature scent is the one you wear most of the time and that people come to associate with you. It is worth spending a little more on, choosing an EDP or parfum, and buying in a larger size once you are sure of it. Our top pick, La Vie Est Belle, and the refillable Alien are both built for this kind of use.
An everyday or office scent does a different job. It should be easy to wear, not too heavy and not too loud in shared spaces. Lighter EDTs and skin scents, like Daisy Eau So Fresh or Emporio Armani She, are a better fit here. Many people own one of each: a lighter scent for work and daytime, and a richer one for evenings and special occasions.
Which bottle size gives the best value?
Larger bottles almost always cost less per millilitre. In our range it is common for a 100ml bottle to cost only a little more than the 50ml of the same perfume, so if you already know you like a scent, the larger size is usually the better buy. Divide the price by the number of millilitres to compare properly.
Smaller sizes still have their place. A 30ml or 50ml bottle makes sense for a perfume you are trying for the first time, one you only wear occasionally, or a parfum where you only need a spray or two. Perfume keeps well when stored properly, but an opened bottle you never finish is not good value, however cheap it was per millilitre.
How to try a perfume before you buy
Spray a tester on your wrist rather than a paper strip if you can, then wait at least 20 to 30 minutes. Perfume changes as it dries, and the first few seconds are not a reliable guide to how it will smell for most of the day. Try no more than two or three at a time, or they become hard to tell apart.
Perfume also smells slightly different on different people, so a scent you liked on a friend may not come across the same way on you. If you are buying online, one option is to buy a smaller size of something new first, then move up to a bigger bottle once you know it works.
Storing perfume so it lasts
Heat, light and humidity are the main things that spoil perfume. A drawer or cupboard in a bedroom is better than a bathroom shelf or a sunny windowsill. Keep the cap on to limit air getting in.
Stored well, an unopened bottle keeps for years and an opened one should stay good for a long time. If a perfume starts to smell sharp or sour, or the colour changes noticeably, it has probably turned.
FAQs
Which lasts longer, EDT or EDP?
EDP usually lasts longer because it contains a higher concentration of perfume oil. EDT is lighter and tends to fade sooner, which many people prefer for daytime and warmer weather. How long any perfume lasts also depends on your skin and the style of scent, as richer, warmer perfumes generally linger longer than fresh, light ones.
What is the difference between parfum and eau de parfum?
Parfum is more concentrated than eau de parfum, so it usually lasts longer and you need less of it. It is often sold under names like 'Le Parfum', 'Absolu' or 'Elixir'. It also costs more per millilitre, and the formula is often adjusted, so it may smell slightly different from the EDP of the same name.
What is a skin scent?
A skin scent is a perfume designed to stay close to the body rather than spread across a room. People around you notice it when they are near you, rather than when you walk in. Skin scents are a good choice for offices, close-contact jobs and anyone who finds stronger perfumes too much.
Is it worth buying a 100ml bottle?
If you already know you like the perfume and will wear it regularly, usually yes. In our range the 100ml is often only a little more expensive than the 50ml. If you are trying something new or will only wear it occasionally, a smaller bottle avoids waste.
How many sprays of perfume should I use?
For an EDT, two to four sprays is typical. For an EDP, two or three is usually enough, and for a parfum one or two. Apply to pulse points such as the wrists and neck, and avoid rubbing your wrists together, which does not help the scent last.
Are refillable perfume bottles worth it?
They can be if you wear the same perfume for years. You keep the main bottle and buy refills, which cuts down on packaging and can cost less over time. Check that refills are available in the size you want before buying the refillable bottle.
