Best duvets in the UK, by tog rating

By the buychecked team · Updated 9 October 2026 · Prices refresh daily from the retailer feed

The most important choice when buying a duvet is the tog rating, which measures how warm it is. In the UK, a 10.5 tog is the usual all-year choice, 4.5 tog suits summer or anyone who runs hot, 2.5 tog is a very light summer duvet, and 13.5 tog is for cold bedrooms or people who feel the cold.

For most single beds our pick is the 10.5 tog Luxury Super Soft duvet from The Big Little Duvet Co. It has a peached microfibre cover, hypoallergenic hollowfibre filling and is machine washable. Hot sleepers should look at the 2.5 tog version, which can also go inside a thicker duvet's cover as a top-up layer in winter.

Every duvet in this guide is an extra large single, measuring 220cm long by 165cm wide. That is longer and wider than a standard UK single duvet, which makes these a good fit for tall sleepers, long single beds, small doubles in a guest room, or anyone who finds a standard single leaves their feet or back exposed. Remember that you will need an extra large single duvet cover to match.

How we chose

We have not slept under these duvets. We shortlisted them by comparing the published specifications, tog ratings, fill, cover fabric, size and care details, price and the retailer's own product information across the range of duvets we list, then picked one that suits each type of sleeper. Our current duvet range comes from a single UK maker and is all in one size and one fill type, so this guide focuses on choosing the right tog and cover fabric rather than comparing brands. We have included standalone duvets only, not duvet covers, protectors or bundles.

1. Best overall

10.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

10.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

£59.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for most sleepers, all year round

A 10.5 tog duvet is the safest single choice for a typical UK bedroom with the heating on in winter, and the maker describes this one as an all seasons duvet. It has a 100% peached microfibre cover, which is brushed to feel soft rather than crisp, and 100% hollowfibre filling that is listed as non-allergenic. It can be machine washed warm and tumble dried on low, which is useful for a guest or student bed that gets washed often. The extra large single size gives more length and width than a standard single. It sits in the middle of this range on price.

✓ Pros

  • Middle-weight tog suits most rooms and most of the year
  • Soft peached microfibre cover
  • Non-allergenic hollowfibre fill, machine washable

✕ Cons

  • Can be too warm in a hot summer bedroom
  • Only available in extra large single, so check your cover size

2. Best for hot sleepers

2.5 Tog Lightweight Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

2.5 Tog Lightweight Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

£49.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for summer nights, night sweats and warm bedrooms

This is the lightest duvet in the range and the cheapest. At 2.5 tog it is little more than a light quilt, which the maker pitches at people who overheat at night, including during the menopause. The cover is 100% peached microfibre and pocket stitched, a construction that holds the hollowfibre filling in place so it does not drift to one end. The maker also suggests using it as a topper inside the cover of a thicker duvet in winter, which gives you a way to add warmth without buying a second heavy duvet. Machine washable warm, tumble dry low.

✓ Pros

  • Very light for summer or warm sleepers
  • Pocket stitched to stop the fill shifting
  • Doubles as a top-up layer in winter
  • Lowest price in this range

✕ Cons

  • Too light on its own for most UK winters
  • Microfibre cover is less breathable than cotton

3. Best for spring and autumn

4.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

4.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

£54.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for people who prefer a cooler bed most of the year

A 4.5 tog sits between the summer and all-season weights. It suits a warm bedroom, a well insulated flat, or anyone who sleeps hot but finds 2.5 tog too thin. This version has a 100% peached microfibre cover and non-allergenic hollowfibre filling, and it is machine washable. The maker suggests pairing it with the 2.5 tog duvet in winter, and 4.5 plus 2.5 together comes to roughly the warmth of a 7 tog duvet, which is a reasonable winter weight for warm sleepers. Budget end of this range.

✓ Pros

  • Lighter weight for warm sleepers or warm rooms
  • Soft peached microfibre cover
  • Can be layered with the 2.5 tog in colder months

✕ Cons

  • Not warm enough alone for a cold winter bedroom
  • Microfibre feel is not for everyone

4. Best polycotton cover

10.5 Tog Polycotton Cover Extra Large Single Duvet

10.5 Tog Polycotton Cover Extra Large Single Duvet

£59.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for people who prefer a crisper, cotton-blend feel

This is the same all-season 10.5 tog weight as our top pick, but with a 50/50 polycotton cover instead of microfibre. Polycotton has some natural cotton in it, so it feels crisper and less fleecy than peached microfibre, and many people find it slightly more breathable. The filling is 100% hollowfibre, listed as non-allergenic, and it is machine washable warm and can be tumble dried on low. If you sleep warm but want a cotton-blend cover, there is also a 4.5 tog polycotton version in the same range. It is priced the same as the microfibre 10.5 tog.

✓ Pros

  • Cotton-blend cover with a crisper feel
  • All-season 10.5 tog warmth
  • Easy-care and machine washable

✕ Cons

  • Less soft to the touch than microfibre
  • Still a synthetic fill, not natural down or wool

5. Best for cold bedrooms

13.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

13.5 Tog Luxury Super Soft Extra Large Single Duvet

£64.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for people who feel the cold or have unheated rooms

A 13.5 tog duvet is the warmest standard weight sold in the UK, and the maker describes this one as suited to colder nights or to people who feel the cold all year. That makes it a sensible choice for a guest room that is rarely heated, a converted loft, or a student room with weak heating. It has a peached microfibre cover and non-allergenic hollowfibre filling and is machine washable. Hollowfibre is fairly bulky for its warmth, so expect a thicker duvet than a down one of the same tog. Upper end of this range on price.

✓ Pros

  • Warmest tog in the range
  • Soft microfibre cover
  • Machine washable

✕ Cons

  • Too warm for most heated bedrooms outside winter
  • Thicker and bulkier to wash and dry

6. Best premium

10.5 Tog Supersoft Sateen Stripe Extra Large Single Duvet

10.5 Tog Supersoft Sateen Stripe Extra Large Single Duvet

£69.99 at The Big Little Duvet Company · best for a smoother, sateen-stripe cover

The Supersoft Sateen Stripe is the maker's 'executive' version of its 10.5 tog duvet. The filling is the same 100% hollowfibre, but the cover is a peached microfibre with a sateen stripe weave, which gives a smoother, slightly shinier surface and a subtle striped look. The maker rates it for use all year. It is machine washable and can be tumble dried on low. It is the most expensive duvet in this range, and the difference is in the cover fabric rather than the warmth, so choose it if you like the feel and finish. There is also a 4.5 tog version.

✓ Pros

  • Smoother sateen stripe cover
  • All-year 10.5 tog warmth
  • Also offered in 4.5 tog

✕ Cons

  • Highest price in this range for the same fill and tog
  • Most of the cover is hidden by your duvet cover anyway

What tog rating do you need?

Tog measures how well a duvet holds in heat. The higher the number, the warmer it is. It says nothing about how heavy or thick the duvet is, as different fills give the same warmth at very different weights.

As a rough guide for UK homes: 2.5 to 4.5 tog for summer, hot sleepers, or very warm rooms; 7 to 10.5 tog for spring, autumn and most heated bedrooms all year; 13.5 tog and above for winter, cold rooms, or people who feel the cold. If two people share a bed and run at different temperatures, the cooler sleeper usually wins with extra blankets rather than a heavier duvet for both.

All-season duvets and layering

An all-seasons or combination duvet is usually two duvets, often a 4.5 tog and a 9 tog, that clip together to make a 13.5 tog for winter and come apart for summer. We do not currently list a combination duvet, but you can get the same effect by layering. The 2.5 tog duvet in this guide is designed to slip inside the cover of a thicker duvet, so a 10.5 tog plus a 2.5 tog gives you around 13 tog on cold nights.

Layering also lets you wash each piece separately and store the lighter one in the airing cupboard when you do not need it. Make sure the two are the same size, or the smaller one will slide around inside the cover.

Fill types: hollowfibre, microfibre, down and wool

All the duvets in this guide use 100% hollowfibre, a synthetic polyester fibre with a hollow core that traps air. Hollowfibre is non-allergenic, cheap to buy and easy to wash at home, which makes it a good choice for allergy sufferers, children, students and guest beds. Its downsides are that it is bulkier than down for the same warmth and tends to flatten over a few years.

Other fills you will see elsewhere include microfibre (a finer synthetic that feels more like down), feather and down (lighter and longer lasting, but harder to wash and not suitable for some allergies), and wool (good at regulating temperature, popular with hot sleepers). If you have a dust mite or feather allergy, a washable synthetic fill is usually the simplest option.

Size: what 'extra large single' means

A standard UK single duvet is around 135cm wide and 200cm long. The duvets here are 165cm wide and 220cm long, so they are noticeably wider and 20cm longer. That extra length helps tall sleepers and suits extra-long single beds, and the extra width means the duvet drapes over the sides of the bed rather than sitting on top.

The catch is that a standard single duvet cover will not fit. You need an extra large or extra long single cover, which the same maker sells, so check the cover size before you order. A duvet protector of the same size is worth considering for children's or student beds.

Cover fabric and care

The cover, sometimes called the casing or ticking, affects how the duvet feels and breathes. Peached microfibre is brushed to feel soft and warm. Polycotton is a cotton and polyester blend that feels crisper and is easy to care for. A sateen weave gives a smoother, slightly glossy surface.

Every duvet here is machine washable warm and can be tumble dried on low. A single duvet usually fits in a standard home washing machine, but thicker high-tog duvets need plenty of room to rinse properly, so a launderette machine may do a better job. Dry it completely before putting it back on the bed, as damp fill can smell and clump.

FAQs

What tog duvet is best for all year round in the UK?

A 10.5 tog is the usual choice for all year in a heated UK home. If you sleep hot, a 4.5 tog with a 2.5 tog top-up for winter gives you more flexibility.

What tog duvet is best for summer?

Choose 2.5 to 4.5 tog. A 2.5 tog is very light and suits hot nights or people who overheat, while a 4.5 tog suits a warm bedroom or a cooler summer.

Is a 13.5 tog duvet too warm?

For many heated bedrooms it is too warm outside winter. It suits cold or unheated rooms and people who feel the cold. If you are unsure, a 10.5 tog with a lightweight duvet to add in winter is more flexible.

Are hollowfibre duvets good for allergies?

Hollowfibre is a synthetic fill and is generally non-allergenic. Because it can be machine washed at home, it is easier to keep free of dust mites than feather and down. All the duvets in this guide are listed as non-allergenic and machine washable.

Will an extra large single duvet fit a single bed?

Yes. It is larger than a standard single duvet, so it hangs further over the sides and the foot of the bed. You will need an extra large single duvet cover, as a standard single cover is too small.

How often should I wash a duvet?

Most people wash a duvet every few months, and more often for children or allergy sufferers. Using a duvet cover, and a protector if you like, keeps it cleaner between washes. Always dry it fully before using it again.
